Capture from DVD - In accordance with DVD Forum specifications, VideoWave prohibit users from recording DVD video streams from the DVD player analog output if the DVD title uses Macrovision anti-copy protection.

Capture from VIDEO - When trying to capture video, a message appears noting either Copyguard or Macrovision protection. Capture will not continue. Some hardware will note video with some flashes of color or shakiness as being a signal of a copy protection scheme used on commercial videotapes, and sends a signal to VideoWave that in turn prevents capture. Only videotapes, which have no copy protection scheme, can be captured or use the above Time Base Correction (TBC) unit

In Adobe Premier, you need to make sure you select the "mojave device" (the Dazzle) as your capture device, otherwise the software will not use the special plug-in * Go to Project, Project Settings, Capture, and make sure that Mojave Analog Record is set as the capture device. As soon as it is selected, it should initalize the card and make the lights blink on the BoB Break Out Box * You cannot use Windows Movie Maker. You are limited to either VideoWave 4 special Dell edition, or Adobe Premier with the special plug-in * The Dazzle card also functions with Ulead MediaStudio Pro 6.5. Go here http://www.ulead.com/msp/runme.htm

CAPTURE FROM CAMERA OR VCR - * Shut off the computer, camera and/or VCR * Reconnect the VCR, power it on, with a tape inserted put the VCR into play/pause mode * Reconnect the camera, power it on, put the camera into play/pause mode * Power on the computer * Open the MGI Videowave software * Select the capture icon * Select settings * Select advanced * Select video settings * Select Video Proc Amp * Click on Default * Click on OK * Connect an S-Video cable to the inside of the (BOB) break out box * Connect the other end of the s-video cable to the back of the CPU next to the monitor plug in * Click Start- (Settings)- Control Panel * Look to the left. If listed, click "Switch to Classic View" * Click Display- Settings- Advanced * Click the NVIEW tab * Select the clone option * Click Apply Then start the software, go to capture video and settings set the video source to s-video. The screen will still be black. Start the VCR and then go back to the settings in the software and switch back to composite video and it will start working. All captures, whether from a DV source (such as a DV camcorder) or an analog source (such as a vcr or an analog camcorder) are done in dv/avi format. Part of the reason for this is that the link between the Dazzle breakout box and the firewire card in the PC is itself a firewire (high speed digital) link, and analog inputs are therefore converted to digital in the breakout box before transmission to the firewire card in the PC. Conversion to more compact formats is accomplished in the final step of the editing process (variously referred to as "producing," "building" or "rendering"). At that point, you will have many choices of format, including formats compatible with DVD, VCD, RealPlayer, Windows Media Player, etc. This is discussed further in the Videowave manual, which includes (in one of the last few chapters) a nice table of typical data rates & file sizes for various formats. See the links in #13.

VIDEO CONNECTORS EXPLAINED - Go here http://www.puremotion.com/videoediting/reference/technical/videoconnectorsexplained to see an explanation of video connectors.

OUTPUT TO TV/VCR OR CAMERA - * Produce the file in DV-AVI format * Drag the clip to the View screen * Select the DV output mode * Press the Play button * Click on the Begin button to output to TV/VCR or DV Camcorder

COULD NOT DETECT DV CONTROLLER - "How do I change from composite to Digital Video on the firewire card?". You can only change the capture setting while you are in capture mode. While in capture mode with anything on the preview (other than static) click on Settings. Then in the dialog box change the input device. Don't use the Dazzle Mojave device, instead choose the Microsoft DV Cam device. "Where did that come from?" The one Dazzle Mojave physical device, is really two virtual devices. The one called Dazzle Mojave is for composite or S-video input. The other called Microsoft DV Cam is the firewire that runs through the Dazzle break-out-box

CHECK TO VERIFY CAMERA WAS RECOGNIZED - * Connect the camera to the computer * Turn on the camera and set it to VCR or VTR mode * Click Start- (Settings)- Control Panel * Look to the left. If listed, click "Switch to Classic View" * Double click the System icon * Select the Device manager tab then click the Refresh button at the bottom of the dialog. The system will take a few moments to refresh and you should then see a new category 61883 Device Class. * Click the '+' sign in front of 61883 Device Class. The dialog should display a driver 61883 Class Bus Device and a new category AVC Device Class * Click the '+' sign in front of AVC Device Class. The dialog should display a driver AVC Device. The camera may appear under the heading of "Imaging device" along with 61883 Device Class in Windows ME, and below Imaging Device in Windows 2000. In Windows ME, if the camera is plugged in and turned on it can be viewed in the "My Computer" section as well. To capture and output video, windows must recognize the hardware and the files must be produced in the correct format. Tests can be run to see if windows operating system is recognizing the IEEE card and the camera on the system. If windows cannot see the device, then third party software will not be able to see the camera. Windows must see the camera before a capture can be done with Video Wave or other software such as Windows Moviemaker that comes with Windows ME, and Windows XP. These steps are a general guide on installing a IEEE 1394 card and should not replace the instructions provided by the hardware manufacturer. * Install the card in a PCI slot * Power on the system * The card should be found and ask for drivers, if not, the card could be defective * Once the drivers are installed from the manufacturers CD,right click the My Computer icon * Click Properties * Click the Hardware tab and/or the Device Manager button * You should have a new category called 1394 Bus Controller * Click the '+' sign in front of it. You should see the driver "Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller" or "PCI OHCI IEEE 1394 Host controller" listed. * At this point, the card and the computer are functioning together. Try your video capture software

VIDEO DEVICE IN USE - "You can not use this video device when another video application, such as DVD, video conferencing, video editing, TV viewers, or WebTV for Windows is already using it.....". That message comes up when the default capture device "Video for Windows" is selected. The Dazzle device is not compatible with the Video for Windows API. When the Windows that comes up shows Dazzle Mojave Device, it attempts to use it through the Video for Windows API, but fails. Mojave Analog Record should be listed in the same drop down box as Video for Windows.

NO SOUND DURING CAPTURE PROCESS - During analog capture, the audio as well as the video are transformed by the breakout box into a DV (digital video) data stream, which is then transferred to the computer via a firewire or USB (high speed serial digital) link. The breakout box's analog outputs are not involved in this process; the purpose of the breakout box's analog audio (and video) output connectors is to support outputting of produced video & audio files FROM the computer TO an external vcr or other analog device. You will not hear any sound during capture. If you subsequently put the captured file into a storyboard and play it in the preview window, you should be able to hear (preview) the sound. Of course, if you use the Microsoft Movie software to capture, you will hear sound during the capture.

AUDIO/VIDEO NOT IN SYNC ISSUE - Using a double-RCA/mini red/white audio cable, connect Audio Out from the Movie Studio 2 Breakout Box to the Mic In or Line In jack on your computer soundcard and VCR. Movie Studio 2 will then play audio through your computer and to your VCR at the same time, allowing you to hear what you are recording. Connect your computer soundcard's Audio Out to the Audio In jacks of your speakers. * Double-click the yellow/grey speaker icon in the System Tray by the time * Click Options and Properties * Insert a dot on recording * Put a check in every box and click OK Insert a check under Mic In or Microphone Set the Balance controls in the center position Position the volume control at least 3/4 way up

20 MINUTE CAPTURE LIMIT - Neither the Standard Movie Studio Bundle nor the Premium Studio Bundle are considered professional video capture/edit programs. When capturing video from either a vcr or camera, the limit before you incur audio/video sync issues is 20 minutes. In other words, an hour of video must be broken down into three 20 minute capture files

COPY GUARD SIGNAL DETECTED ERROR MACROVISION - Nvidia card owners should use the TV-TOOL - Go here, http://tvtool.info/index_e.htm. This program is specificaly designed for NVIDIA card users with tv-out cards. This program allows you to not only obtain full-screen playback, but also allows you to work through the Macrovision protection.

Some hardware will note video with some flashes of color or shakiness as being a signal of a copy protection scheme used on commercial videotapes. This sends a signal to VideoWave that in turn prevents capture. Only videotapes which have no copy protection scheme can be captured. It is likely that your personal VHS/Hi8 tapes are to old, thus the capture software is sensing flashes of color or shakiness on the tape. Go here for more information, http://www.mgisoft.com/support/index.html. Type macrovision in the blank under step 2. A Time Base Correction (TBC) unit will clean the signal. The Time Base Correction (TBC) unit will clean/stablize the analog video signal and will allow you to copy the tape without generating the copy guard error. Go here for more information on TBC, http://www.aaacamera.com/dv_tbc_1000.html.

OUTPUT TO EXTERNAL DEVICE IS GREYED OUT - To output to any external device (analog or digital) using the Dazzle setup, you must produce using the DV template (as opposed to mpeg or any other format). That is because the link between the PC and the Dazzle box is itself a firewire link. The Dazzle box then converts to analog for output to a vcr.

BLACK BARS AROUND THE VIDEO CLIP - The source files may not be the correct frame size or the output is not being done at the correct aspect ratio (e.g.: 4:3 for TV viewing). * Frame size of the source files should be 720x480. The file when produced for output must be a DV-AVI file (also 720x480). If the source file (video or still image) is not 720x480, then when being produced it will be stretched to fit. This will result in an out-of-ratio finished file with black bars around the image. The output to a television is a standard 4:3 ratio. But if the TV being used is a 16:9 format (widescreen) then your video will be displayed with black bars around it, even if captured and produced at 720x480

DISTORTED OR BLURRY IMAGE - When I view my home videos from my hard drive or CD using the Media Player software, I can the view 4" or 5" inch video just fine. When I click on the Full Screen, the video is very distorted and blurry. This is because you are taking a small image (640x480 or lower) and stretching it to over 1027x768 which increases pixel size and distorts the image
